vol. 2

Autumn is here giving the City a new look, our site also has a new look. I hope everyone likes our new website. We put a lot of time into it and we're excited about it. I hope it will be very helpful.

As always, a bunch of great artists have been coming through to have their projects mastered here at JLM.

Dave of Animal Collective was in to attend the mastering of there new EP titled "Fall Be Kind". All you AC fans will love it. Bryce Dessner (The National) was in with the new Clogs release. One of Joe’s favorite songwriters Anders Parker came in to master his new double CD. One disc is all acoustic, the other electronic. Sub Pop’s Happy Birthday brought their pop rock album to us --very fun album with a slight punk edge. An up-coming album for The Soft Pack under Kemado Records and Heavenly Records (UK) was recently mastered. NYC’s Field Theory was also in to master their new release. Chicago’s Russian Circles brought their self-titled record in --it’s a big instrumental rock record that sounds amazing! In addition to previous projects for HBO, James Lavino, a composer for television and concert film based in the UK had a new set of work mastered here at JLM ...saying, “sounds amazing, as usual”. This full length documentary debuted at SXSW and now will be casting a wider net after mastering.

Green Owl recording artist The Very Best brought in their project. They are a great band out of Africa and some of the songs feature M.I.A.! It’s a very cool record. LA’s Globes On Remote brought in their new full-length release “The Woo Hoo Hoo” (Check out the video for Space Camp).

Several DFA recording artist’s including Yacht, Free Energy, The Rakes and Peter Gordon have kept the uber cool factor going strong here as well. Also check out the B-sides to Dirty Projectors great CD “Bitte Orca” that were just released.

Roman Vail has been steadily assisting Joe and mastering his own projects. Most recently, an exciting EP from The Robbie Cook Band was mastered and hip-hop break-out artist Maveric had his project mastered here courtesy of Harlem’s Faculty Recordings. A hard rock album for The Fine Grain out of Nashville had their album mastered with Roman, as well as double-CD album of live urban groove/funk recordings by Fleur Earth Experiment --originally from Germany, but mastered here in Brooklyn... plus others.

Vinyl is still going strong and we have been busy cutting records for many of the above-mentioned artists, as well as Pet Shop Boys, The Juan Maclean, Glass Ghost, Toro Y Moi and Tom Von Voigt.

We have a new ATR102 (1/2” and 1/4” heads) we used for some of the projects mentioned above. Some of the best sounding records come off of analog reels (especially for rock).

You can say that in just a little over a year we are settling into the studio’s new home in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

The sky’s the limit here.
